Preview: Thundercat @ Royal Festival Hall (London; Sunday 4th July 2019)

thundercat southbank

The thought of seeing Thundercat brings bass to my mind and ears; I immediately consider the bass faces and the sheer depth and boom that comes from Thundercat’s custom six-string bass – and he sure puts those extra two strings into action. Soul, hip-hop and heavy heavy funk.

Watching Thundercat’s band jam, whilst he performs solo in a truly unprecedented, warped style, is rather enthralling. To feature this artist in the Southbank Centre  as part of the Nile Rodgers‘ curated Meltdown festival seems a little confusing in terms of the chosen venue, but I’m guessing they are highlighting him as an innovator of bass-driven jazz. On each track, following the instruments, specifically, the bass, can feel like a race to keep up; confusing, yet brilliant.

Certainly a unique sound.

Review: Bestival @ Lulworth Estate (Dorset; Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th August 2018)

Friday The site was nicely spread out, but unlike mega festivals, walking from one side to another did not diminish too much energy or take too long. Unfortunately, the festival’s app didn’t want to show me the 2018 line-up – it instead rubbed in the fact that A Tribe Called…

This contrast best represents the city’s multiple facets: richness and poverty, innovation and tradition, history and modernity all living together in one place. This blend and mix…
