Daily Discovery: Biomigrant · El Monte Adentro – Voz Emplumada del Monte
Voz Emplumada EP, from which “Voz Emplumada del Monte” is extracted, is the result of the collaboration between Colombia-based North American folktronica flutist, producer, and DJ Biomigrant (Michael Alfred Wagner) and Monte Adentro, a newly-formed collective of Mexican folk musicians from Veracruz, which includes members from well-known local groups Los Aguas Aguas and Sonex.
Together they released a 5-track EP re-interpreting the sound of son jarocho, the traditional style of the Veracruz region in Eastern Mexico.
According to his words, Biomigrant was introduced to son jarocho by neighbors and friends. He traveled to Southern Veracruz, where he met an older musician, El Guero Vega, and learned about the community-driven nature of son and the fandango.
Michael also met Edwin Bandala Mayo, a jaranero of the Veracruz band Los Aguas Aguas, and together they started to jam in Edwin’s studio, exploring club electronica beats based around Son’s rhythmic meter.
As they worked on their EP, Edwin invited childhood friends from the Xalapa folk music scene to add their personal touches and flavours.
