Mukambo Mixtape: Chico Science Vive – Viva o Manguebeat
Tribute to Chico Science, the Brazilian Fela Kuti, godfather of manguebeat. His crossover of Pernambucan traditions like maracatu, coco, ciranda & embolada with ’90s culture (hip-hop, rock) gave birth to a whole new style and movement called manguebeat, the beat of the mangrove. With his tragic death in 1997, the movement took a devastating blow, but some bands are keeping the cultural crossover of Brazilian rhythms and global grooves alive, adding dancehall and digital beats to the mix.
This manguebeat 2.0 mixtape pays tribute to the great Chico Science by showing what bands make out of his legacy today.
Live mix recorded on Sunday 22/08/2021 at Ai Que Bom cultural centre in Brussels.
