Naphta is a musician, producer, and DJ based in Wroclaw, Poland. Red Bull Music Academy alumni blends grooves from all over the world, the slickness of disco-oriented house/techno music and free jazz creativity (with Sun Ra as his guide), with p-funk synths, wild guitars and afrobeat thrown in for a good measure.
He released a string of 12” EPs: Solar Empire on Transatlantyk, Baltic Rim on OMENA, Palm Trees Love on Studio Barnhus and Enter the Dagon on Father & Son Records And Tapes. His debut album, 7th Expedition conceived with the help from musicians from all over the world, dropped via Transatlantyk. Naphta’s second album, Naphta and the Shamans, dropped via Astigmatic Records last year and its collective, jazzy and psychedelic flavor garnered support from the likes of Gilles Peterson or Andrew Weatherall and got into numerous year-end lists.
His DJ sets are eclectic and soulful, with a variety of house, drum-heavy beats, and disco iterations involved, his live show, constructed around obscure samples, driving bass guitar and dirty drums, is adventurous and passionate. Originality, artistic bravery, and respect for the musicality of dance music are his beacons in today’s electronic music scene, dominated by generic and uninspired sounds. Recently, he got involved in Gaijin Blues – a duo merging Japan-inspired melodies with Western beats.
