AFRI-KOKOA Presents SURA SUSSO Live! Friday 22nd July 2011 / 8pm - 2am OPEN THE GATE, 33-35 STOKE NEWINGTON RD, LONDON, N16, 8BJ Afri-kokoa presents a rare and precious performance by SURA SUSSO live with his band performing tracks from his new Album ‘Sila Kang’. He is an extremely talented young Gambian musician and Kora player who comes from a deeply rooted traditional family of distinguished musicians, yet is equally happy engaging ‘out there’ with the contemporary music scene. The younger brother of Seckou Keita and sister of Binta Susso he is the third son of Mamudou Susso, a renowned griot in The Gambia. His father played lead kora and sang vocals in Ifang Bondi, a very successful international group of talented Gambian and Senegalese musicians. Sura’s mother - Fatou Bintou Cissokho - was also from a griot family that hailed from Ziguinchor in the Casamance region in Southern Senegal – a place famous for its wealth of musical talent. She was a singer and a very talented percussionist in her own right Sura has collaborated with the likes of Maximilian Baille - artfully mixing the complementary sounds of the kora and the violin - and the duo Askew and Avis (this led to the recording of the Kora Song Radio Album) Has also taken time to contribute to a joint performance with French trumpeter Erick Truffaz for the Brecon Jazz festival. A great privilege for Sura and his popular vocalist sister, Binta Susso, was the opportunity to perform at Glastonbury Festival in 2009. This took place at the Africa Express Event where the two siblings were invited to perform with the legendary Baaba Maal.
