African Rootmaster Showcase

A celebration of the best African inspired acts on the UK festival circuit this coming summer.

Drawing on a combination of African and UK influences, this night will showcase 3 UK-based bands taking African music in fascinating international directions.

Gambian kora with rock, funk and reggae, Algerian oud meets psychedelics, Zimbabwean marimba + Congolese guitar meet house and electronics….

Maverick Gambian griot Jallykebba Susso mixes traditional Mandinka kora music (beautiful melodious 22-string West African harp) with 8-strong international band Manding Sabu drawing on rock, reggae and afro-beat; 70-year old master of the Algerian mandol, Seddik Zebiri, displays his unique take on the music of North Africa that ends up sounding like a psychedelic, Hendrix-inspired desert blues thanks to his powerful band Seeds of Creation.

Hotly-tipped new live project Afriquoi fuse live marimba, African guitar, djembe, African vocals, dancehall MCing and crisp, heavy beats into an uplifting, dance-friendly blend of chimurenga, soca, soukous, dubstep and house: afro electronics!

Featuring legendary exiled musicians Kudaushe Matimba (Zimbabwe: Bhundu Boys, Harare) and Fiston Lusambo (Congo: Zong Zing All Stars), alongside UK Ableton wizard Nico Bentley and percussionist Andre Marmot, this is African music for the facebook generation….

All of this washed down by top tunes from across the African diaspora courtesy of Mr. Brett, driving force behind South London’s gritty hi-life/afrobeat/funk sensation Yaaba Funk.

Managed by Continental Drifts (festival experts with 20 years experience), the Global Local project is funded by the Arts Council England with an emphasis on developing audiences and artists of Global music grown and developed in the UK.

The ‘African Rootmaster’ element of this is managed by Wormfood, one of London’s most exciting live music organisations, responsible for much of the programming at the official No.1 Live Music Venue in London, Hootananny Brixton, including the weekly Sunday ‘Rootmaster’ world music night, as well as Valley of the Antics at Secret Garden Party and events around the country.
