Angola 40: Filipe Mukenga + Kutonoka Project

EFG London Jazz Festival and Angola 40 present

Filipe Mukenga
Singer, composer and guitarist Filipe Mukenga is an Angolan jazz legend. He has been playing and composing music for fifty years, and this is his first ever appearance in the UK. Filipe skillfully and delicately combines the dissonance of Angolan music and language with jazz, blues, soul, the church music of his childhood and influences of French and Latin-American rhythms and sounds.

Filipe is a pioneer of 'Nova Musica de Angola', a combination of semba, jazz and funk. Filipe says of NMA: ‘this is music open to the world and characterised by rich content and harmony’. Filipe’s very personal repertoire will captivate and inspire you!

The Kutonoka Project
Welcome to the Kutonoka Project, an afro-jazz musical project where the compositions fuse the ethnic rhythms of Angola with jazz, makossa, funk, samba, rhumba and more.

Kutonoka, from one of the Angolan native languages, means 'celebration', which forms the basis of Joao de Oliveira's septet. The group's musicality presents a flow of emotions where rhythm melts with composition and reveals itself as a link amongst peoples and cultures from the four corners of the world.

The Kutonoka Project translates the universal meaning of Joao de Oliveira's music, a classical trained pianist, who reflects life, love, and even the history of societies in his music.
