Equator Festival presents:
Atongo Zimba was born in the savannahs of northern Ghana in 1967. His grandfather taught him how to play the koliko or molo – a two stringed calabash lute - at a very young age. Atongo's family are cowhearders and Atongo used to play his molo and compose all his own songs whilst he was minding the family's herd.
Like many of his contemporaries, Atongo was enthralled by the sounds of Fela Kuti's afrobeat. Inspired, he left his home town to discover the musical idioms of the surrounding regions, and then lived in Lagos, Nigeria – becoming the opening act for Fela Kuti at his legendary club, The Shrine.
Following the nomination of his third European release "Barefoot in the Sand" as best African Album of the year in Holland, where his record label is based, Atongo Zimba and his band have performed at major festivals all over the world.
Atongo will be touring the UK in 2013 to promote his brand new CD, "Sankuune" (the name of a dance).
He is accompanied by percussion and electric guitar.
"Atongo Zimba's distinctive voice cleaves through the air like a sparrow"
