DJEMBASS - All Day African Drum & Dance Festival

T-Roy Bush Meat Offical Album Launch

On Saturday 20 August, Focus Organization, in partnership with Broadcite and Ticket Web, is hosting the bimonthly Djembass African Festival at the CLF Art Café in South London, in support of The Black & Ethnic Minority Arts (BEMA) Network - an organisation that believes artists working in partnership can change the world for the better. Not only is this the official album launch for one of the freshest Afro-Tech Dj’s around, T-Roy, with a live set featuring Bumi Thomas, but there will also be crowd-rocking performances from Kasai Masai (Congo), Benin City (UK Hiphop), Rough Science (UK Ska/Rock) and Dj’s Bogossy (Playvybz Radio & Choice FM), Eric Soul (Afrogroov), KMT and Oya Bun (Focus).

T-Roy’s cross-continental influences gave birth to his new concept album Bush Meat. It encapsulates a new generation of sounds inspired by African rhythmic beats and unleashes elements of Afro-beats, nu jazz, broken beats and electronica. T-Roy connects with an awesome selection of artists on this project – such as Wunmi, Kuku, Aero Manyelo, Wanlov Kubalor, Voice, Heidi Vogel, Bumi Thomas, Local Instruments – and this eclectic mesh of sounds invites you to experience the experimental edge of today’s African music, inspired from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia. With wide-ranging international DJ support, the Bush Meat album connects the dots between the evolving African music scene and contemporary Britain.

Bumi Thomas, who features on the Bush Meat LP, will be performing live with T-Roy at the CLF. Her dynamic African jazz/neo-soul style is inspired by her multicultural identity. Born to a Brazilian Lagosian Father and Igbo mother her reality was always punctuated with the tribal sounds of her eclectic heritage.

Kasai Masai

After appearances at Womad 2006, Sarawak Rainforest Festival Malaysia 2008 and El Poble Espanyol Barcelona 2009, London based Kasai Masai have become renowned party rockers. Blending traditional Congolese sounds with a modern twist, their energetic and upbeat live sets are well renowned. KM is composed of musicians who have played with some of the best African artists, like Madiata, Defao, Langa Langa All Stars, Franco & TP OK Jazz and Wenge Musica. Nickens has also played with Quartier Latin of Koffi Olomide, recorded with Papa Wemba, Kanda Bongoman, Zaiko Lang Langa and many more. Overall, they put on an astounding total of 600 shows across Africa and Europe, playing in venues like the Zenith Olimpia in France. Their 5 piece band consists of the djembe, guitar, saxophone, bass and drums. Come and see before their big show at Royal Albert Hall in August.

Benin City

Hailing from the same exploding scene as Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Pillers of the Community, Benin City are influenced by Outkast, Gnarls Barkley and The Roots. Fronted by Joshua Idehen, they are described by The Times as "London's hottest new spoken word talent". This five-piece outfit –featuring a superb quartet on drums, sax, trombone and Bass – have also played storming live sessions at the BBC Radio Theatre and Xfm.

Rough Science

Rough Science are the proud new winners of the Sound of Excellence Music Award - for their contribution to the unsigned music scene. Having rocked audiences at venues like Cargo and the Jazz Cafe’, Rough Science's infectious ska/rock beats will get you up on the dance floor in no time.
