Two of Pakistan’s most extraordinary musicians show off completely different yet equally entrancing sides of spiritual Sufi music; the sound of Islam’s mystical inner dimension.
The charistmatic mystic who honed his craft singing at holy shrines, Sain Zahoor Ahmad [Official] ’s performance is ecstasy defined. Singing into his one-stringed ektara, while spinning in a rapturous dance, spurred on by his ensemble’s chorus of flute, harmonium, tabla and dholak drums, he practically resonates holy energy.
One of the most respected singers of qawwali – the best known style of Sufi music, Faiz Ali Faiz ’s powerful vocals backed by chorus, tabla and percussion are as rhythmic, hypnotic and powerful as waves breaking on the shore.
While previous shows have seen him experiment fusing Sufi sounds with flamenco and gospel, here he brings the raw spiritual power of traditional qawwali.
