Since his arrival in the UK in 2008, the charismatic creator and leader of Gnawa Blues All Stars, Simo, has performed at a host of festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Latitude and Boom Town.
Playing traditional Gnawa (sacred trance music from Morocco) and Gnawa fusion with his bands Electric Jalaba, Gnawa Griot, and Gnawa Blues Allstars, Simo continuously pushes new boundaries fusing Gnawa with music from countries such as Gambia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Guinea, Mali, India, Japan, Venezuela and the Caribbean. Look out for special guest musicians playing with the band!

Afrobeat & Highlife from brand new project YAP - short for Yung Afrika Pyoneers! Come and soak in their delicious Afro grooves.
Inspired by Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah formed the first Young African Pioneer movement in Ghana in the 60s to promote Pan-African ideology amongst the youth. This ideology was adopted by Fela Kuti and he subsequently formed a manifestation of the Young African Pioneers in his sovereign home, Kalakuta Republic, in the 70s.
In the 21st century the latest manifestation of young african pioneers takes the spirit of Nkrumah, Garvey, Fela and applies it to a Post-afrobeat, Post-post-Truth world, and attempts, using the popular music forms of africa and beyond, to forge a new ideological direction for a new generation.

After a 3 year wait, and returning on its 40th anniversary, to say there was anticipation around Womad ’22 would be a vast understatement. The line-up played it safe in some respects, with old favourites looming large; but there were bright spots of new musical energy, hungrily met by pent-up…
