Russ Jones and Hackney Globe Trotting return for a new season. After an explosive 2010 it is onwards and upwards for HGT. More club nights, gigs, stages and even a record label. The global and tropical music scene continues to grow at a formidable pace with is influence reaching just about everywhere and creating a very strong presence here in London town.
Our first guest for 2011 is the excellent African music expert DJ Magrelo who has been travelling and collecting music from around the world for over 20 years, with a particular interest in Africa and its diasporas across the globe. He collaborated at the legendary Future World Funk nights at the Notting Hill Arts Club, played at the Lake Of Stars festival in Malawi and at various clubs and events in the UK. He also launched the club night 'Hotplate', a musical melting pot mixing tropical ingredients from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond.
From traditional roots music and analogue rhythms to the latest dancefloor grooves and digital sounds, DJ Magrelo provides an original and authentic taste of global beat culture. African music is Hotplate's speciality, whether it be hip-shaking rumba from Kinshasa, coupé decalé from Abidjan, electro sounds from Bamako or house music from Cape Town, Paris, London & NYC.
So far your regular fix of world-wide musical explorations from latin ghetto-bass to vintage afro beats, Thai funk, classic cumbia, Asian beats, Balkan bangers and dancehall go no further than Hackney Globe Trotting!
