Our autumn season kicks off with Kasai Masai bringing the vibrant sounds of soukous and rumba to St. Mary's Church, Walthamstow. Heralding from Congo, the band's music reflects their journey from the rural to urban, combining music that has been passed on from generation to generation with their own contemporary style, led by renowned percussionist, singer and dancer Nickens Nkoso.Written in Swahili, Lingala and Kimongo, Kasai Masai’s lyrics portray the cultural diversity of Congo where more than four hundred languages are spoken. Their original compositions move beyond traditional expectations of Congolese music, with galloping rhythms, strong melodies, passionate beats, guitars and saxophone to create an infectious form of dance music. The five-piece band have graced the stage of festivals in the UK and around the world, including WOMAD Festival, Liverpool's Africa Oyé (Official) and Malaysia's Rainforest World Music Festival to name but a few.
