KAYA A FESTIVAL OF WORLD MUSIC, YOUTH, DIVERSITY AND CULTURE -

Set overlooking the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. Kicking off the festival season, the inaugural Kaya Festival will be on Friday the 1st, Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd of June 2012.

Held near Bangor in the picturesque grounds of the Vaynol Estate (recent host to the BBC Big Weekend 2010), Kaya offers an assortment of African, Jamaican, Caribbean and World musical flavours along with a diverse range of workshops, food stalls and festival activities..

WORLD MUSIC • WORLD FOOD • WORLD LOVE!

AFRIKAYA SATURDAY - FROM THE RIVERS OF BULAWAYO AND THE STREETS OF SOWETO TO THE SWELTERING AFRO BEAT GROOVES OF LAGOS!

Kaya is perfectly placed within the calendar year to take advantage of the two public holidays of Bank Holiday Monday 5th June and the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebrations on Tuesday 6th June. Why not extend your stay and enjoy the beauty of Snowdonia and North Wales after the festival finishes? For a family it takes you nicely into your half term holidays, without some of you having to rush back to work!

TONY ALLEN - The Godfather of Afro Beat.

As the drummer and musical director of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s band Africa 70, Tony Oladipo Allen is one of the primary co-founders of Afrobeat music. Fela once stated that “without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat”. Currently working with Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz fame he has been described by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived”.

SONA JOBARTEH

Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso from a prestigious West African Griot family, coming from a long line of hereditary musicians. She is the granddaughter of the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and cousin to the celebrated Kora maestro Toumani Diabaté. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and producer Sona works with musicians from around the world.

KANDA BONGO MAN

Legendary performer Kanda Bongo Man revolutionized Soukous by encouraging guitar solos after every verse and even at the beginning of the song. His form of Soukous gave birth to the kwassa kwassa dance rhythm where the hips move back and forth while the hands move to follow the hips. Famously championed by the UK’s favourite John Peel.

Podcast: Radio Mukambo #497 – Future Sound of Afrobeat

This week Radio Mukambo only serves afrobeat. Some sounds you’ll recognize as afrobeat, others may be what the future of afrobeat will sound like. Playlist: Afrobeat No Go Die… A Tony Allen Tribute by Bukky Leo

Tributes and homages to artists who recently passed away often sound trivial or trite if done by someone who wasn’t directly connected with them. That’s why we always repeat the mantra that we prefer to let the music do the talking and ask fellow musicians, who grew up and/or shared…

Event Review: Kanda Bongo Man @ Komedia (Brighton; Saturday 12th October 2019)

Within seconds of entering the room, the sense of anticipation was palpable. One felt sure that some exciting Congolese rhythms were certain to banish any rainy-day blues. The band made their way on to the stage, nonchalantly picked up their instruments and began to play their opening number, sung by…

Review: Jazz Re:Found (Turin, Italy – 7th to 11h December 2016)

Today, black music is warmth, experimentation, crossbreeding, avant-garde, tradition, and rhythm. Spread across seven…
