Late Night Jazz: Sarathy Korwar & UPAJ Collective

srathykorwar

As part of our Unstoppable Voices season and Independent Venue Week, Indo-jazz percussionist Sarathy Korwar will headline a special Elgar Room show with the UPAJ Collective.

Led by Sarathy in a seated circle facing one another, the ensemble will guide you through a selection of homages that explore Indian ragas and talas, with smatterings of western harmony and hypnotic jazz.

The result is a truly contemplative experience of ten tracks traversing fervent percussion, meditative passages of ambiance, raw improvisation and traditional Indian music, which is as beguiling as it is edifying.

Album Review: Sarathy Korwar – More Arriving [The Leaf Label; July 2019]

On the list of the worst conversation starters, “Where are you from?” would be right up there. Reducing the person to a Lonely Planet cardboard cut-out is one thing, but when the question is prompted by your accent, complexion or general foreignness, it becomes a euphemism for, “You stick out…
