Join the Africa Centre at Passing Clouds for a night of uplifting high-energy music as we come together and unite under the midsummer sun to celebrate the summer solstice!
We'll be soaking up the vibes of some classic soukous and rumba from Samba Mapangala, a legend of East African music, currently touring with his classic 80s band, the Orchestre Virunga. Coming from the golden era of Lingala music alongside acts like Les Mangalepa and Orchertra Super Mazembe, Mapangala is one of the great voices of his time. Expect his soulful melodies to be swept along by crystal clear guitar lines and hypnotic beats.
***SAMBA MAPANGALA AND ORCHESTRA VIRUNGA***
Samba Mapangala and his group Orchestra Virunga are one of the classic bands from Central and East Africa. Known and loved for his astounding voice throughout East Africa and beyond for the last 30 years, Samba created an innovative mix of the best Congolese rumba and Soukous with an earthier Kenyan style. Their song and CD of the same name Malako Disco (originally released in 1984 and later renamed Virunga Volcano in Europe) is regularly included in lists of the top all-time African recordings.
Samba's audience is very broad, loyal and international, comprising fans of Kenyan, Congolese and world music. His reputation as an exciting performer and brilliant vocalist is well established and Virunga's upbeat dance music never fails to bring the audience to its feet. Samba's latest album, Maisha Ni Matamu (Life Is Sweet), was released May 2011.
