Mulele Matondo Afrika

Kinshasa-born Mulele Matondo Afrika started music at an early age before he established himself in Zambia and Zimbabwe as a bassist, guitarist and arranger with a flair for his home grown Congolese style still extremely popular there today. As Ponpon Matondo, he enjoyed success early in his career working with Chris Chali and Amayenge, Real Sounds of Africa, Lubumbashi Stars and New Stars Musica V.S.V.L. (which he co-founded).

Mulele was deeply affected by endless conflict back home, and inspired by outspoken artists before him which led to him writing music for the people - songs about real lives and problems. Mulele’s musical style is inspired by the traditional sounds and rhythms of the Twa (in DRC). Mulele and his band play conscious roots music to heal your spirit and entrance you to dance with guitars bringing the hypnotic sounds of the sanza fused with sweet jazz riffs, while percussion and drums provide ancestral African rhythms. Infectious melodies in multipart harmony belie Mulele's sober messages of unity, freedom and spiritual awakening for Afrikans in the face of corruption, injustice and oppression.

Mulele has collaborated with artists such as Mermans Mosengo from Playing for Change, Diabel Cissokho, Natty King, Lopango Ya Banka amongst others, performing at venues such as London’s Jazz Cafe and across the UK and in DRC.
