Penya is a band formed by Colombian singer/songwriter Angelica Lopez in 2009.
Having just released it’s debut album to critical acclaim, Penya is already making waves on London’s underground World Music scene, using the Violin/Flute Charanga formula as it’s inspiration to mix many other influences.
Hailing from the city of Cartagena on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Angelica grew up dancing Cumbia and Mapalé barefoot on the hot streets of her hometown.
Immersed in the local folklore of the coastal region, and yet inspired also by the magic flooding the airwaves from elsewhere, her career – a professional singer by 17 – took her to London where she quickly felt at home artistically and decided to put down roots, gradually forming a band called Penya with like-minded musicians.
Penya’s music – a seed-mix of styles and influences which is as rich and varied as the ethnic backgrounds of its members – borrows freely from the cultural fusion that blooms all around them.
