Album Review: Aziza Brahim – Sahari [Glitterbeat Records; November 2019]

Sahari is an exciting new step for Aziza Brahim featuring more electronic elements than her previous two Glitterbeat albums Soutak and Abbar El Hamada. The different soundscapes and instrument arrangements of each track give a coherent arc to the music and storytelling. Unlike her previous albums which were recorded as…

Gallery: Family Atlantica + Vula Viel @ Jazz Café (London, 20th May 2017)

Less than a month ago, we had the pleasure to co-promote an exciting event at The Jazz Café. Interview: Luzmira Zerpa – Family Atlantica (March 2017)

Before learning to walk and talk, Luzmira Zerpa was already singing… well, maybe that’s not literally what happened, but since an early age, the woman who would become the voice, cuatro player and relentless energetic drive of Family Atlantica grew up in an environment where listening to, singing and playing…

Review: Family Atlantica @ Battersea Arts Centre (London, 14th September 2016)

It’s always good to go back to the Family. You can constantly feel at home with them and experience that comfortable atmosphere which smoothly makes you at ease. I don’t know if that’s because of the music they play, attitude they have, or good vibes they give out, but every…

Review: Aziza Brahim @ Union Chapel (London, 22nd September 2016)

You simply need to look at her, her eyes and expression to understand the nature of the experiences, adventures and encounters that Aziza Brahim has gone through in her life. The Sahrawi singer/songwriter, true mouthpiece of her people’s daily fight to be recognised, has spent her entire existence as a…

Album Review: Family Atlantica – Cosmic Unity [Soundway, 13th May 2016]

Family Atlantica is ‘London’s musical melting pot at it’s very best’ according to reviews from The Guardian. The band, which consists of London-born multi-instrumentalist Jack Yglesias, Venezuelan vocalist Luzmira Zerpa, and half-Nigerian, half-Ghanian percussionist Kwame Crentsil, started out in an abandoned vicarage in Hackney, East London, before winning fans over with…

Album Review: Aziza Brahim – Abbar el Hamada (Across el Hamada) [Glitterbeat]

The new album by Barcelona-based singer Aziza Brahim from Western Sahara is a masterpiece in the expression of displacement felt by the thousands of refugees from her homeland, of which she is one. Produced with sparkling clarity by Chris Eckman (who also worked with Bassekou Kouyate and Tamikrest) Abbar el…
