THE BEST from AFRICA

>>> YAYE DIB SABAR <<< West African Dance Company

Yaye Dib Sabar is a West African drum and dance company based in London, UK under the direction of Diene 'Waaw Waaw' Sagna.

The aim is to spread the diversity and beauty of West African culture to the UK and abroad.

The 'Sabar' is a traditional drum of the Wolof people of Senegal. It is usually played with one hand and one stick. Sabar music and dance is an important part of Senegalese culture and is enjoyed at social gatherings and celebrations, political and sporting events and in the popular music scene. Wolof master percussionists use complex, rapid and syncopated rhythms; some playing accompanying rhythms whilst others solo.

These rhythms are also expressed by Sabar dancers. The dance is a celebratory dance gestured through lively body swings, sharp leg juts, hip thrusts and the symbolic and spirited 5-step jump.
