Think of bluegrass and chances are The Beverley Hillbillies and Duelling Banjos come to mind. But bluegrass is more – so much more. It's simple in structure, yet it has given us some of the most talented musicians on the planet. It inspired no less than the king himself, Elvis Presley, though the Slippery Hill Boys's version of 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' is somewhat faster.
Their music takes in lightning-fast classics ('Foggy Mountain Breakdown', 'Blackberry Blossom'), soulful harmonies ('Hard Times') and gospel tunes ('May the Circle be Unbroken'). There's quite a bit of swapping around of instruments – it's rare to have one highly-talented banjo player in a band, let alone two, one of whom doubles as a fine flatpicker. Mandolin and bass complete the line up, with the occasional bit of penny whistle. Magical.
