In association with Gilles Peterson's Steve Reid Foundation, we celebrate the funk and soul-inflected deep jazz sounds of Tribe Records alongside iconic trombonist and co-founder of the label, Phil Ranelin.
Producing spiritual, groovy, funky and soulful jazz layered with political awareness, Detroit-based Tribe records was formed in the 70s by a collective of impassioned musicians including Wendel Harrison, Marcus Belgrave and Harold McKinney. Always fully in control of their work, the group used the label to promote local talent and raise black social consciousness. Despite only being active in that decade their records continue to be re-released around the world, demonstrating the timeless nature of their music.
Phil himself has been a main stay of the jazz scene for decades, having shared bills with the likes of Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp. We’ll join him in celebrating this incredible label as well as his 80th Birthday with the release of his long-awaited 3 Record Vinyl Box Set on WideHive Records Phil Ranelin Collected 2003-2019.

Album Review: Gilles Peterson: Havana Cultura Anthology [Brownswood Recordings, 2nd December 2016]
This is the ‘anthology’ of modern Cuban music that embodies the diversity of a new generation of artists beyond the Buena Vista Social Club legacy. This is also the ‘anthology’ that embraces a good number of Afro-Caribbean rhythms – son, salsa, reggaeton, hip-hop, Latin jazz, among many others – linked…

Review: Jazz Re:Found (Turin, Italy – 7th to 11h December 2016)
Today, black music is warmth, experimentation, crossbreeding, avant-garde, tradition, and rhythm. Turin’s Jazz Re:Found festival explores these definitions, with a curious and forward thinking vision on music, honouring great names of the past while looking at the most current scenes with a sharp eye and sensitive ear. Spread across seven…
