Tony Allen + Aziz Sahmaoui & The University Of Gnawa

Afrobeat legend Tony Allen will return to the UK this November, with a very special show lined up at Village Underground. The pioneer of jazz and funk drumming will be celebrating the launch of his new album Film Of Life with a night packed full of the same genre-defying innovation he has built his phenomenal career on.

Cited as the powerhouse behind the late Fela Kuti's Afrobeat and Highlife movement, Tony has continued to push the boundaries of musical definitions, and has been described by Brian Eno as 'perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived'. Intent on adapting to current influences, Tony has spent the years following Fela deconstructing the sounds of dub, electronica, R&B and rap with Afrobeat, to create a hybrid genre he calls Afrofunk.

Out on 20 November, Film of Life features collaborations with Damon Albarn and cutting-edge producers The Jazzbastards. Get ready for a party here on the same night, as we celebrate the latest release from a true innovator.

Tributes and homages to artists who recently passed away often sound trivial or trite if done by someone who wasn’t directly connected with them. That’s why we always repeat the mantra that we prefer to let the music do the talking and ask fellow musicians, who grew up and/or shared…
