Playlist: Women of the World – IWD 2019 (Friday 8th March 2019)

[Women with tuba]

It’s International Women’s Day and here at Rhythm Passport HQ we’re celebrating female power with a playlist of 20 of our favourite female world and jazz artists.

Let these musicians take you through the sound of femininity in its ever-changing forms, from the wild sassiness of Sudan Archives to the soulful sensitivity of London’s own jazz singer Judi Jackson

Let yourself be inspired as the ladies take over your stereo. Happy IWD!

Gatluak - Nyaruach

Gatluak by South Sudanese, Activist and War Survivor NYARUACH. The 2nd release off the joint album NAATH between Emmanuel Jal and his sister Nyaruach. Naath is a vivacious Afropop album where Emmanuel and Nyaruach have drawn from the sounds of the South Sudanese village. "South Sudan is still suffering from years of war and oppression, we feel it is our cultural responsibility to bring out the music and voices from our country. As siblings we were forced apart in our childhood through extreme circumstances, so we are excited to be united on this project to bring the sounds of our village to the mainstream." Emmanuel & Nyaruach. The music video is shot by young people living at Kakuma Refugee Camp and Turkana County. 01 Jessica Lauren - Kofi Nomad (Radio Edit) [Freestyle Records]

Download: Subscribe: Official stream from Freestyle Records. Distributed by Kudos Records. On iTunes: On Spotify: On Amazon: More music playlists: Album: Kofi Nomad [SINGLE] Track: 1 of 3 Title: Kofi Nomad (Radio Edit) Artist: Jessica Lauren Label: Freestyle Records Cat#: FSRJESDIG01 Formats: Digital Digital Release: 6th April 2018 About This Release: Since the early 1990s, keyboard player Jessica Lauren has been a familiar part of London's alternative music scene. Jessica's keyboard skills have augmented the live performances and studio recordings of world renowned artists such as Jean Carne, Tom Browne, Dexter Wansel and James Mason, Japan's United Future Organisation, and UK soul diva Juliet Roberts. Her previous Freestyle album 'Jessica Lauren Four' (2012) highlighted Jessica's minimalist approach, something rare and refreshing in the jazz world: she instills her compositions and playing with a refined sense of space which makes her music as much about what she doesn't play as what she does. Kofi Nomad is a deeply percussive afrocentric epic, featuring the beautiful baritone playing of Tamar Osborn (Collocutor), one of the most in demand woodwind players working today, underpinned by a powerful foundation of percussion courtesy of Richard Ọlátúndé Baker, Phillip Harper and drummer Cosimo Keita Cadore. Amalfi in contrast is a light, breezy bossa, which conjures up images of easy living days and sun dappled Mediterranean coastlines. This three track release not only gives more than just a tantalising hint of the soundscapes contained within the forthcoming long player Almería - it also features a brand new & exclusive remix of Kofi Nomad by Jessica's long standing collaborator Emanative (Nick Woodmansey). Reviews for This Release: "How good is this ? Superb new music from one the UK's finest." - Kev Beadle "Another excellent offering from keys whizzj Jessica Lauren... guaranteed to hit plenty of playlists" - Paul Bradshaw (Straight No Chaser / WWFM) "Seriously superb, as one would expect with Jessica!" - Marcia Carr (Girlz B Like/ "Oh my days it's so good to have the Queen of the keys back, and what a return!" - Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s) "Lovely sounds. Big fan and supporter of Jessica since the early 1990s" - DJ Lubi (Lubi Jovanovic) (Soul Rebels Sessions) "Loving it!" - Claire Umney (Jazz FM) "Truly Delightful!" - DJ Rahdu (BamaLoveSoul) "Jessica Lauren is a living legend, always love to hear some new production from her! Great jazz tunes." - Tibor Mozsik (DJ Keyser) (Cratesoul Radio Show) "Jessica has hit the nail right on the head here. It could easily be a 6ts Blue Note track and that's the highest praise I could give. Perfect 5*****" - Stevie Watt (Soul Bowl) "Always ready for some new music from Jessica Lauren. Kofi Nomad sounding amazing!" - playjazzloud (
