Playlist: Jazz:Re:Found festival (Turin, Italy; 29th November to 3rd December 2017)

A few weeks after being named Italy’s electronic music capital, Turin is ready to unveil its most soulful side with one of our favourite music festivals: Jazz Re:Found. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this year’s festival presents an incredibly vast line-up that escapes any kind of strict definition.

Looking at the line-up, you’ll probably ask yourself whether it is a jazz, dance or experimental music festival. The answer is none and all: the magic thread is black music – its legacy, its present and its future evolution.

Jazz Re:Found kicks off on the last weekend of November, after two exciting preview dates in Milan – the gig a couple of weeks ago from legendary Brazilian fusion-jazz band Azymuth and the upcoming show on November 25th from West Coast six-string bass maestro Thundercat.

The festival forte is undoubtedly a well-balanced program – the balance between live gigs and the dance floor; tradition and innovation meet local and global.

Over four intense nights, Jazz Re:Found will bring together Cory Henry & the Funk Apostles soulful gospel, Technoir, Italian funk-jazz institution James Senese & Napoli Centrale, Rhythm Section‘s founder Bradley Zero, drum ‘n’ bass legends Goldie and Roni Size, as well as Jameszoo‘s experimental “computer jazz”. Italian dub-Ska band Casino Royale will also wow the crowd – concluding with a glorious night where composers Chassol and Moses Boyd will perform alongside dancefloor masters Motor City Drum EnsembleNicky SianoPeggy Gou and Tama Sumo.

Here’s a playlist to get you ready while you’re booking your tickets to Italy’s former capital – a gentle reminder that you’re doing the right thing.

Azymuth - Jazz Carnival

Subscribe to Far Out: Buy Vinyl / CD / Digital Here ▼▼▼ Far Out Shop: Bandcamp: Stream on Spotify: Azymuth's career-defining LP Light As A Feather returns. Home to their worldwide disco/fusion hit single ‘Jazz Carnival’, the samba-doido staple 'Partido Alto', and the proto-deep house masterpiece ‘Avenida Das Mangueiras’, this album typifies the trio’s tireless innovation in the fields of jazz, funk, samba and cosmic music perhaps more so than any of their other ground-breaking records from its era. Their first release on Milestone Records in 1979, it quickly became one of the best-selling LPs of the year, staying in the UK Top 20 for eight straight weeks with more than half a million copies sold. An incredibly well thought out album both in pace, song selection and musicality, ‘Light As A Feather’ marked a maturing of the band as they began to rightfully utilise the studio as an instrument itself, embracing numerous mixing and recording techniques not yet common for the time as well as pioneering the use of the Big Muff and Dolby System to great effect. The result is an album that endures to this day as a samba/jazz-funk masterpiece. First reissued in 2012, the Far Out edition of this seminal recording was remixed and re-mastered from the original 16-track tapes, which were given to Joe Davis by Azymuth. This latest version is the first ever issue to be complete with a download card that that gives access to previously unreleased tracks, including the incredible full length version of 'Jazz Carnival', as well as remixes from house stalwarts Theo Parrish, Ashley Beedle, and Mark E. Napoli Centrale - 'Ngazzate Nire
