Kokoroko - Adwa

Release date: 8th March 2019 OUT NOW on vinyl and stream: bit.ly/2tVL6jH Kokoroko are part of the thriving scene that’s grown out of London’s young, jazz-influenced musical circles. Led by bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey, their self-titled EP is the group’s first solo release, following their early 2018 debut with ‘Abusey Junction’, a track that has gone on to accrue over 15 million plays on Youtube and 2.6 million on Spotify. Across the EP’s four tracks, the eight-piece deliver on the promise of that memorable introduction, offering a bigger vision of their Afrobeat-influenced, soulfully-imbued sound, West African roots shaded with inner London hues. ‘Abusey Junction’ was first featured on We Out Here, the 2018 Brownswood compilation documenting London’s bright-burning, jazz-influenced musical underground, picked by Rough Trade as Compilation of the Year 2018, and praised by The Wire, Monocle and the New York Times. Writing and performing as a group since 2014, Kokoroko have played at iconic venues from Ronnie Scott’s, performed at the festival, Afropunk, and toured in Brazil, Colombia and France. Inspired by Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor, Tony Allen and the great sounds that come out of West Africa, Kokoroko put on a performance to honour the masters that taught them.

Hailu Mergia - Shilela [Ethiopia]

Hailu Mergia "Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument" LP/CD/Tape/Digital: https://www.awesometapes.com/produc... Hailu Mergia is a one-man band. In 1985, master accordionist and veteran bandleader, arranger and keyboardist released the Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument cassette. In a nostalgic effort to bring back the vintage accordion sound of his youth, Hailu gave Ethiopian music a sonic makeover. He was already celebrated for his work with the groundbreaking Addis Ababa ethio-jazz and funk outfit Walias Band. With imagination and a visionary sense of the self-contained possibilities of modern music, he captured the popular sounds of the past using the modern tools of the day. Hailu Mergia weaves Moog DX7 synthesizer, Rhodes electric piano and rhythm machine into the rich harmonic layering of his accordion, creating hauntingly psychedelic, elegantly arranged instrumentals. These tunes draw from famous traditional and modern Ethiopian songs, as Hailu brilliantly matches lush Amhara, Tigrinya and Oromo melodies with otherworldly flavors soaked in jazz and blues, synthesizing a futuristic landscape. He balances Ethiopian music's signature melodic shape with beautiful analog synth touches, floating upon clouds of hypnotically minimal rhythm tracks.

A Certain Ratio - Houses In Motion (Official Video)

A CERTAIN RATIO celebrates their 40th anniversary this year with a new box set and tour. Details here: http://mute.com/a-certain-ratio/40t... Houses In Motion is reworked from original tapes, recorded in 1980 with Martin Hannett. This track, a Talking Heads cover, was intended as a collaboration with Grace Jones. Although Jones attended a session with the band at Strawberry Studios in Stockport, her vocals were never completed and the vocal on this version (recorded by Jez Kerr, prior to him becoming the band’s singer) was only ever intended as a guide vocal. Jez Kerr continues, "It was great to find this lost track and, even though the original idea was for Grace Jones to sing on it, I think this version captures the essence of ACR at their best – when we are being ACR and sounding like no one else." https://twitter.com/acrmcr https://www.instagram.com/acr.mcr/ https://www.facebook.com/acertainra... http://mute.com/ DANCERS : YESSICA GOTCHA ALEX VALDEZ DIRECTED - AJ GOMEZ PRODUCED - ROBERTO NIEBLA AND ANTONIA LEMA DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY - JUANSA AVALOS ASOCIATE PRODUCER - JESUS GARCÍA GUILLÉN FIRST ASSISTANT DIRECTOR - CAMILA BARRAGÁN SCRIPT SUPERVISOR AND EDITOR BALBINA CANALES PRODUCTION MANAGER SECOND UNIT CAMERA OPERATOR SEBASTIAN ORIA KEY SET SECOND UNIT CAMERA OPERATOR FOCUS PULLER RICARDO BARRERA LOCATION MANAGER - MIGUEL ¨ BIG MIKE ¨ MOYA STYLING AND MAKE UP- DIANE ALONSO CAMARA ASSISTANT : GERMAN ORONÁ STAFF : CARLOS ZAMBRANO MUÑIZ REMORE CONTROL MOBI OPERATOR HUMBERTO JIMENEZ ALMAGUER DATA BRAULIO MARTINEZ PRE -PRODUCTION KARLA MATA COLOURIST ALAN ZÚÑIGA

Joe Armon-Jones - Almost Went Too Far (Official Animation)

Joe Armon-Jones Starting Today https://brownswoodrecs.lnk.to/start... Released on Brownswood Recordings on LP, CD, digital on 4th May 2018. Joe Armon-Jones combines free-flowing, dynamic energy with a bigger vision. A prodigious, head-turning keys player, debut album Starting Today is a showcase for his ludicrous chops on the piano, and the like-minded, equally talented bandmates who join him on the record. But there’s a clear, tangible thread which runs through it too: from hip-hop to dub, a wide spectrum of sounds is refracted through a shared, dedicated approach to playing. Starting Today follows the Idiom EP released with Maxwell Owin in 2017. Picked by The Vinyl Factory as one of 2017’s best EPs, it led to live shows at Boiler Room and Jazz Cafe, and was supported by Touching Bass on NTS and Thristian on Worldwide FM. Last year also saw Ezra Collective (of which he’s a co-founder) release their Juan Pablo EP and headline shows at Islington Assembly Hall and Ronnie Scott’s.
