Casting musical cornerstones in a fresh light, the TOSHIO MATSUURA GROUP features Tom Skinner (drummer for Sons of Kemet and Owiny Sigoma Band amongst others) as its musical director, as well as some of the UK’s most exciting jazz-influenced musicians. Drawing on years of surveying and curating different corners of music, Matsuura deftly combines this talented pool of players into one singular, wide-ranging album. A co-founder of Japan’s United Future Organisation (aka U.F.O.), this new record sees Matsuura reconnect with longstanding friend and collaborator Gilles Peterson. Releasing the album via Brownswood Recordings in the UK, it’s a continuation of a relationship which started as a bridge between London’s then-blossoming jazz scene and Tokyo’s new musical vanguard of the early ‘90s. This album continues that two-way dialogue between Japan and the UK.

A video clip project that expresses the mergence of diverse cultures and comprehensions by prioritizing aesthetic concerns. Influenced by the eastern culture, the project suggests a new “new world” concept, that is called “Neuland”. Indestructible denied by the women characters, masculine-dominant infrastructure has been faced a small yet an initiative response by taking down the imposer with what was imposed. Half of the pioneering duo “Lulacruza” since its inception in 2005, with whom he has released 5 albums, a feature film and multiple world tours. His music is dance floor bound: rooted in various indigenous traditions while borrowing from the aesthetics and sound design of electronic music. With his new solo project he has already toured extensively around Europe, the US and Latin America even before his debut album has yet to drop. “Jenga” is the first track to be born out of Uji’s solo project. An enticing mixture of sounds from nature (water, frogs, animal panting) blend with a kind of secret vocabulary transcending specific languages merged with contemporary beats. The track seems to cast a spell that transports us to a pre-verbal state reminiscent of tribal cultures, ritual and a sense of being symbiotic with nature as luscious synth sounds draw us into the magnetism of darkness, balancing sophistication with simplicity.
