In times of end-of-year charts, top ten lists, ‘top of’ and ‘best of’, we’ve preferred to keep things as inclusive and smooth as possible, so we have simply “listened back” to 2017 and summed up what our speakers, headphones and earphones have played the most.

Born in Bolgatanga in rural Ghana, King Ayisoba was a prodigy on the kologo, playing locally until he’d outgrown the possibilities of the area. Moving to Accra, the country’s biggest city, he eventually released the song “I Want To See You, My Father.” There was nothing modern about it. No hiplife rap, no electronic beats. But somehow it conquered the country and brought the tradition firmly into the mainstream.
“It was Song of the Year and Traditional Song of the Year,” says album producer Zea. “He also had a song called “Modern Ghanaians” that said we shouldn’t forget the tradition. Instead we should use it to fight modern problems.”
With that mantra, King Ayisoba became the unlikeliest star. His music was a strong weapon for Ghana’s traditions. What he wanted, though, was to play with a band, to bring what he called the “man-power” to give the full drive to his sound. On the album Wicked Leaders, with Zea producing, that’s exactly what he did.
After that Ayisoba toured Europe together with Zea, opening up solo, providing guitar, vocals and live electronics on stage, and Francis Ayagama joined King Ayisoba's band on djembe and bemne drums
Alone or with beats, ultimately the power that propels 1000 Can Die comes from the band itself, from the sense of history that forms every piece of music. It’s there in every musician. They all go home and farm. They’re connected to the land, and the songs are part of the harvest they bring from the fields and from their own families.
“Ayisoba’s grandfather played the kologo,” Zea says. “But only in the house. He was a healer, a shaman. People would come and tell him their problems. He’d make a connection with the spirits, then play and start singing, and his stories would include solutions.”
On 1000 Can Die, King Ayisoba is digging a new future from Ghana’s soil.

They told me everybody's 15 minutes in a different time zone
And since I have it at the moment you're the one I wanna shine my light on
Get your life, get your life, little mama, won't you get your life on
Ain't nothing cooler than the wrong moves, when you do them to the right song - the right song.
Let's shoot this movie and put the shit on repeat
I hope this Mary's not making you fall asleep
Before we hit the road - put our phones on silent
- nobody's tryna bring sand to the beach
What would it take to change your plans for the weekend?
Coz I'm tryna kick it like EA
The whole thing; the pre- party, the pre-sex
Then we hit the Major League, where the G's at

Director's Statement: "We shot it on the Red Dragon, around places of personal significance to Amir and Toine, in the areas where they grew up in Prince George’s county. The main goal of the video was not an aesthetic one, but to simply have fun, enjoy the journey, and reminisce at the old haunts. Every location we pulled up to, Amir and Toine would get really excited because they hadn’t been there in such a long time, so I didn’t want to kill the enthusiasm by taking any time to set anything up. So for this video we decided to try and capture the entire thing with a single lens, the 18mm Zeiss Superspeed, allowing them to do whatever they wanted and move wherever they wanted to go. We ended up using a 10mm and an 18mm to get all the surroundings and the two of them playing off of each other in performance. With this method we were able to get everything in single takes at each location and nothing got stale before it was time to move on." - Zak

----------------
Broke up with my man and went to Amsterdam alone.
So I packed a bag and I called a cab, I switched off my phone.
Empty chair next to me, just my luck window seat.
I'm already loving being on my own,
I'm already loving being all alone
In a little cafe with a little high grade maybe it's a little too strong But when in Rome l, I do as the Romans do build me up a spliff or two,
Inhale exhale say hi - hi - to the new.
Need to get lifted needed to get lifted needed to get lifted after you.
If you're waiting for the smoke to clear keep waiting my whole week Is eating nuff origami preeing paintings I will never feel alone Jamming with Van Gough and Frida Kahlo bun on the stress and bun trouble floating around the city save up in this bubble
You couldn't burst if you tried hate to say it to you killed my vibe but You killed my vibe and harshed my buzz Life is blessed till there was us rode until the wheels fell off crushed the whole thing into dust dug a hole buried us nothing left to reconstruct
Last few months were kinda dead saltiness the sourness
them kind of flavours ain't the one need some seasoning some rum Need to jet needed fun need to do it on my ones need to get you off my cloud heaviness it brings us down
put some space between us then put the sea between us then put this weed between us I wasn't wrong was right to leave us behind been kinda low and I needed to climb hurt for a second but giving it time I am on my j's and it's feeling so nice 'Dam's a healer booked a flight
Needed to get lifted..
Part timer in the city set the trail ablaze
Eyelids kind of happy that I'm wide-awake
Broken from the day we had to separate
But I'm feeling so much better now I'm miles away
In a haze lose myself for days
Find myself again boarding on a plane hungry for change
little change of scene
Colour it in green
Sprinkle it with herbs
Happy in my world never been better
Needed to get lifted...
