Podcast: Listen to the Label Vol.9 – Tru Thoughts Recordings (February 2020)

In our new podcast series, we’ve chosen to focus on who provide us with the precious “raw material” for our listenings and features: quality new music!

We are talking about those heroes who decided to launch, nurture and cultivate a record label (better if with an ‘independent’ in front of it). As the title suggests, Listen to the Label is our way to pay them a well-deserved tribute, disclosing and recognizing their invaluable work and letting them introduce it with words and tunes.

The ninth episode of Listen to the Label brought us to Brighton where, in 1999, Robert Luis and Paul Jonas launched Tru Thoughts Recordings. 20 years later, Tru Thoughts has spread its name, fame and good taste all over the world building up an extensive and eclectic catalogue ranging from UK hip-hop to Latin music and soul to jazz, winning the Label Of The Year at the annual Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards , and working with established musicians of the likes of Quantic, Hot 8 Brass Band, Bonobo, Rodney P as well as launching talents like Sefi Zisling, The Seshen, Ego Ella May

A few days ago, we reached Robert and tried to recall and let him narrate the story about how a successful Brighton club night turned into an even more successful record label, the relation with Ninja Tune, his passion for hip-hop and what implies running a music label in England without being based in London.
